CHAMPAGNE

Champagne is my religion
Nobody gets killed
--Jacob Bailis

People keep telling us:
A relationship involves more
than just champagne
and motel rooms--
it's hard work.
And we're all, Duh,
we hadn't even considered
that, but thanks for bringing it
to our attention.
And people say: All
those kids the two of you have
aren't going to make it easy.
We're like, You think?

They're right, of course,
these women and men
with good intentions
and ill. It's a world
where champagne is only used
for celebrations, but when
we're together, drunk
or sober, night or day,
the tap water tastes
like a magnum of Mums
and the very air is fizz.
